About March 8th

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights. After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference suggested a Women's Day be held annually. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

The day also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women's rights & build more equitable societies. The goals include ending violence against women, and equality in the progress of women & women's rights.

 women’s rights

Equal Pay, Equal Rights

The Equal Rights Amendment is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex. It seeks to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters.

The #MeToo Movement

Long before #MeToo, women in many parts of the world organized successful campaigns against sexual violence. But in general, #MeToo movement is a global phenomenon to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, especially in the workplace. For instance, https://metoomvmt.org is a website and resource to support survivors and end sexual violence.

Celebrating women in politics

Gender imbalance in politics is not new. Japan for example, only has 1 woman out of 10 politicians in the lower house.

However, there is a significant increase in women's involvement in politics since the inception of the women’s suffrage movement at Seneca Falls in 1848. It is even more exciting to witness a ‘pink wave‘ that elected a record number of 102 women to the House during the U.S. midterm elections. Newcomers include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who won a major upset against Rep. Joe Crowley and the first two Native American women – Deb Haaland (New Mexico) and Sharice Davids (Kansas).

The Badass Women in Science

Whether it is Marie Curie – who discovered polonium and radium and won two Nobel prizes; Mae Jemison - NASA astronaut and the first black woman to travel in space; or Chien-Shiung Wu – American-Chinese experimental physicist who helped separated uranium metal into uranium-235 and uranium-238 isotopes by gaseous diffusion, women scientists have accomplished amazing things that haven't been celebrated in the way they deserve.

With the recent news such as women in science getting less grant, we need to do more to inspire and expose more women to STEM careers, and they can do what they love and they matter. Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing by AnitaB.org is a great example of an initiative that supports women in technical fields.

A #BalanceforBetter World

According to the World Bank report, only 6 countries have achieved equal rights between men and women under the law. All six nations are in Europe, which has some of the most progressive childcare and paid leave policies in the world.

The campaign theme of International Women's Day 2019 is #BalanceforBetter. Everyone has a role to play and it requires our collective action to build a gender-balanced world. Gender balance drives a better working world and together, we can truly make a positive difference for women everywhere.
